Is it because of the fuel shortage? Sort of.

Kinja'd!!!

The issue with EVs here in Mexico is that they’re so economically challenged. This Chevy Bolt is more expensive than my Kia, and it is worse at pretty much everything. But lets compare it to a Golf GTI instead.

If I bought a Golf GTI tomorrow, it would cost me 30,000 dollars, if I got the Bolt, it would be 42,000 dollars.

The Golf uses 4 gallons of fuel per 100 miles traveled, and premium costs 3.9 per gallon. That means I could drive 76,900 miles before catching up to the EV, but let’s add that the GTI has a scheduled maintenance every 9k miles, and it costs around 125USD, so in reality the Bolt catches up by 71,300 miles of use, and seven services.

Let’s imagine I drive 100 miles a week. That would mean that the EV would take 13 years and eight and a half months to recover in terms of economics. Sure, I’m ignoring a great deal of things, like the fact that after 13 years a GTI will require a lot more maintenance than the scheduled one, or ignoring the cost of electricity for the EV (but it’s sort of negligible .

Anyway. EVs don’t need dead dino fuel, so whenever I have an idiotic leader that has little idea of how to manage a petrol company, I can drive as much as I want, and I don’t need to cut back and use the bus.

So, maybe that settles it.

Depending which EV you look at, it probably won’t need a battery replacement in 8 years.

the Hyundai Kona EV has me very interested. ~400km range on a charge and I’ll still have a motorbike and MR2 turbo for when I want something interesting to drive.

How bout buy a cheap bike that gets 60mpg and save a few fuel cans?

I think that my city is not ready for EVs yet, but I would get a PHEV.

But like, I’d have to sell my car and shit, so it’s mostly hypothetical.

It still uses dino fuel, which is kind of the issue. Don’t get me wrong, the shortage didn’t affect me ( I still have 30-32l on my Kia, so I’m covered), but it does show how fragile somethings are.

I'm not particularly well-versed in Mexico's related issues. Is this gas shortage a common occurrence? Likely to happy again? Long-term, or just a few days? Swapping new cars is a pretty big decision

Oh I’m not selling my car.... I’m just sort of lusting for an EV, in five or six years I might switch to one.

Fuel shortages are not common at all , but now we have a very stubborn and rebellious leader that doesn’t really give a shit about the consequences for anything he does .

He went on an impossible crusade against fuel theft that is bleeding our country dry and he’s too stubburn to see it failed. They promised this shortage would end tomorrow but my mayor just announced contingency plans for a longer term shortage .

But that’s just the way he is, and the way he has always governed. Which is probably for the best in 90 % of the cases when his stubbornness will probably end many abuses of power in government. But in that rare 10% when he is too blinded by stubbornness , he is going to hurt us.

I equate the fuel shortage to the government shutdown in the US, just two leaders that are too stubborn to see that things are a certain way for reasons they don’t really understand.

oh yeah, I consider myself lucky that my city has as many charging stations as it does, as well as a 100% renewable electricity grid by 2020.

I’m leaning more towards getting an electric motorbike for commuting and around town and keeping the MR2 for longer trips.

The Bolt and Tesla use active thermal management for the batteries and so far have great holding power. I’ve had my Volt for 6 years and no sign of range loss, but the Volt doesn’t allow 100% usage of the battery. There are now third party companies refurbishing batteries for early Prii, Volts and other hybrids, I see no reason they won’t be expanding into larger batteries as the need arises.
